Dr. Satoshi's Orange Pill: where the phrase came from

"Take the orange pill" started on one of my posters.

I drew Dr. Satoshi's Orange Pill as an old pharmacy ad. A robot hand tips a prescription bottle of Bitcoin capsules toward a diseased human hand, Dr. Satoshi stands in the corner in his lab coat and mask, and the bottom of the poster says TAKE THE ORANGE PILL. The line on the left reads "Take the orange pill and you'll never see money the same way." The idea came from The Matrix, where the red pill shows you how the world actually works. Bitcoin is orange, so the pill became orange.

Dr. Satoshi's Orange Pill poster by Lucho Poletti: a robot hand pours orange Bitcoin capsules from a Dr. Satoshi's Orange Pill bottle toward a diseased hand, under the headline Bitcoin Is Better Money, with Dr. Satoshi in a lab coat and mask in the corner and Take The Orange Pill across the bottom.

The record

  • Late summer 2019. Dr. Satoshi's Orange Pill goes out on Twitter as part of my "Cure what ails you" posters. The next day a follower, thecryptomath, posts it to r/Bitcoin and it goes viral there. See the thread.
  • 18 September 2019. The community is already translating it. I post the first two, "A Pílula Laranja" in Portuguese, thanks to @NinoArtCripto, and "La Píldora Naranja" in Spanish, thanks to @criptobastardo, tagged #orangepill. See the post.
  • 10 January 2020. The Collector's Edition goes on sale here, an edition of 21 on Hahnemühle paper. The same day KnownOrigin lists the digital edition and posts about it.
  • 9 April 2021. Urban Dictionary gets its first Bitcoin definition of the phrase, a year and a half after the translations.
  • 22 April 2021. I said it plainly on X: I'm the originator of the Bitcoin orange pill meme, and I love that so many people use it now.
  • 2019 to 2021. The translations keep coming until the poster exists in 13 languages. They were later inscribed on Bitcoin as Ordinals.
  • 2024. Headlines describe a presidential candidate getting "orange-pilled."

Today the glossaries at Ledger, Blockstream and Tangem define the orange pill without saying where it came from. It came from this poster.
