Eye of Providence: Surveillance, Control, and the Fight for Privacy

"The Eye of Providence is commonly depicted as an eye surrounded by rays of light, enclosed in a triangle. It's associated with divine providence, the idea that a higher power is watching over and guiding the affairs of humanity."

Eye of Providence was created in collaboration with AI, using a large set of AI-generated images, video footage, and original artwork by Lucho Poletti — mixing and merging these elements into a storytelling animation.

The Concept

The Eye of Providence has a long and varied history, and its use and meaning have evolved over time. This piece continues in the same conceptual direction as my earlier work "Surveillance State," using eyes — on top of pyramids, on drones, and other structures — to depict a society where there are eyes watching and surveilling in all directions.

Some members of this society are not subject to the eye of providence, physically standing above the round structure in the center of the artwork; symbolizing that they are also hierarchically above the rest of the subjects.

Visual Elements

The composition is rich with symbolic imagery:

• A child stands looking at a burning cityscape, with riot police standing in the way
• A meteor impacts an earth-like planet behind a dark moon with a large robotic eye centered on it
• Surveillance drones and watching eyes permeate every layer of the scene
• Concentric circular structures create a sense of infinite recursion and inescapable observation

Creative Process

The base image was generated using Midjourney. Individual characters and elements were generated separately using Midjourney and Stable Diffusion, composited in layers over the original image in Photoshop, and animated in After Effects.

The sound design uses licensed music: "The Portal" by Origami Pigeon, edited to create the loop, with added sound effects including explosions, ravens crowing, and thunder.

The Bitcoin Connection

While the piece depicts a nightmare scenario of total surveillance, it also contains seeds of hope. Bitcoin offers an escape route — a way to transact without permission, to store value without confiscation, to exist financially outside the panopticon.
